Are You Ready?
Whether you are wanting to be frugal, eat healthier, or start building your food storage for a peace of mind, you are in the right place! I struggled for a few years learning how to build my food storage on a budget. I want to share what I have learned to hopefully make your journey simpler.
You don't know what you need until you know what you have. Start by going to your pantry and take note of what you have on hand. I found it was easier in the long run to make a spreadsheet. It may not seem important at first, but later on you will thank me.
2. Start small with what you know
Everyone has a handful of go-to meals. Whether it is spaghetti, fried rice, or enchiladas, you have a handful of meals you generally eat every single month. Each time you go to the store, start buying a few extras until you have a two week supply of these staple meals. This is your small emergency food supply. Having gone through a sudden job loss and being snowed in for two weeks, both times I wished I had at least two weeks of meals saved up!
3. Convert your meals to be shelf stable
Most emergencies unfortunately include power outages. Before you store more than a two week supply I highly suggest converting all of your favorite recipes to shelf-stable ingredients. This is actually easier than it seems. If one of your favorite meals is chicken enchiladas, I suggest purchasing either canned or freeze-dried chicken. You can also check out my recipe page for ideas on shelf-stable recipes.
From here, go back to step 2 and continue to build on your food storage with all shelf-stable ingredients. Before you know it, you will be able to weather any storm!
